How To Develop Guest Packages

how-to-develop-guest-packages

To attract more visitors to your bed and breakfast, you may want to develop guest packages.  Packages are a great way to reinforce your brand and your inn’s image.  This also allows you to offer discounts without cutting your room prices.  When you bundle several items, services, and features together, this adds more revenue to your B&B business.

Wondering how to come up with some great ideas for bed and breakfast packages?

Can you offer some courses or classes?  If you teach a particular skill (or can find a teacher), offer a bed and breakfast retreat.

Artist Retreat

Bird Watching Retreat

Book Club Retreat

Culinary Kitchen Getaway

Farming Retreat

Board Games Retreat

Gardening Getaway

Photography Retreat

Quilters Retreat

Scrapbooking Retreat

Writers Retreat

Yoga Retreat

What about featuring local attractions in your area?

Historic Tours Package

Restaurant Package

Spectator Sports Package

Do you want to attract a specific group of people?

How about offering a promotional package during each season?
Winter Specials: could include activities like ice skating, skiing, and snowmobiling

Spring Renewal: everything starts to bloom again

Summer Fun in the Sun: could include amusement or water park tickets

Fall Foliage: certain parts of the country are known for their beautiful autumn colors

Is there a specific sport or physical activity that is popular in your area?

Bike Tours

Golf Getaways

Horseback Riding

What about promoting the holidays to your guests?

New Year’s Package

Valentine’s Day

Labor Day

Thanksgiving Package

Christmas Package

The bed and breakfast package could center around guests’ relationships.

Romance Package (not just for Valentine’s Day, but for any time of the year)

Wedding Package

Honeymooners Package

Anniversary Package

Babymoon Package

Family Travel Deals

There are so many different package possibilities:

  • For mystery lovers, you could offer a Murder Mystery Weekend Package.
  • For couples or single travelers looking to be pampered have a Massage Package or Spa Retreat.
  • If you live near a university, you may offer a package to the Parents of College Students.
  • If your inn is close to a number of major businesses or hosts business conferences, you may offer a Business Travelers Package.
  • If you would like to offer discounts to a specific groups of people you can: Military Special, Senior Citizen Discount, Teachers Discount, etc.
  • If you are a green inn, you could offer a discount to those driving cars with alternative fuel options.  You can reward your guests for being eco-friendly and helping Clean the World.

For more alternatives, offer an a-la-carte approach and let your guests create their own package by choosing from specific add-ons you offer.  They could add chocolate, flowers, heart-shaped balloons, teddy bears, and other special upgrades to their room price.

The package could be centered around the time of the week the stay, “Midweek Specials” for slower times during the middle of the week.  “Spontaneous Specials” for last minute bookings for spontaneous travelers.  Even a Frequent Stay or Extended-Stay Discount.

There are many more bed and breakfast packages that you can put together based on what is in your local area, the types of guests you are trying to attract, your skills, and your amenities.  The key is to design your packages around the desires of the guests you want to attract.

Bed and Breakfasts in December

The Queen Victoria at Christmas - Cape May, New Jersey. Bed and Breakfast Inn

The Queen Victoria in Cape May, NJ during Christmas time

Bed and breakfasts, in December, can put on a spectacular display of holiday cheer. This is the best time of year to decorate your B&B. There are so many creative and festive ways to do so. The Queen Victoria in Cape May, New Jersey has exquisite outdoor Christmas lights! I love how they outlined their bed and breakfast to highlight that their inn has three floors and they hung lit garland with red bows on the fence all the way around their property.

Decorative Doorway at Another Second Penny Inn of Stonington, CT

Another Second Penny Inn hung garland and put up a wreath with a red bow on their reflective glass door. The snow falling in Connecticut just adds to the bed and breakfast’s winter look.  They are located on a leafy, scenic road just 3 miles from Mystic and 2 miles north of Stonington Borough.

Their 1710 New England home offers friendly, romantic, and spacious accommodations for their bed and breakfast visitors. Winner of the Best Breakfast in New England, owners Jim and Sandra Wright, offer deluxe five course breakfasts on weekends and holidays and delicious Continental Breakfasts on the other mornings.

Curious about how this inn got its name? They offer this Ancient Persian saying to explain, “If you have two pennies, with the first, buy bread for your stomach and with the second, buy hyacinths for your soul.”

Time Away Inn Sitters

The Villa

The Villa in Costa Rica

Everyone needs to take a break. Innkeepers are definitely not the exception.  The reasons for taking a break could be for much needed rest, relaxation, upcoming holidays, vacation plans, attending to personal matters, and unfortunately even health related concerns. Carmen Collier and Jeb Marshall were gracious enough to let me interview them about their experiences as Time Away Inn Sitters. Their web page asks, “Are you ready for a break? Carmen and Jeb are professional Inn Sitters, ready to take the stress out of your next vacation or time away.”

For this interview, I will let Carmen and Jeb speak for themselves…

As Inn Sitters, we have learned that each Inn or Bed and Breakfast is unique. We know that responsibilities and constant day to day changes can be overwhelming.  We understand how adaptability and good organizational skills are vital to maintaining your business.  We commit to making the guidelines of the innkeepers they sit for their top priority.  Receiving good reviews and references are also extremely important to us.
bon appétit

Carmen Collier

Hello, I am Carmen Collier, 48, born in Frankfurt, Germany to a full blooded German Mother and a Croatian Father. My Mother was full blooded German born (in 1936) and raised in the Schwarzwald (Black Forest region) of Germany during WW2.  She instilled the importance of doing something right if you are going to do it at all.

My Father was born (1923) in Los Angeles, CA to full blooded Croatian parents. His father immigrated to the States in the early 1900’s at the age of nineteen.

I was blessed to have parents and grandparents who appreciated good food and taught me how to cook and bake at a very young age. Both sides of my family came from a culture where you did not eat “junk food”, fast food, or processed food.

My grandmothers on both sides were phenomenal cooks/bakers. Always using fresh ingredients, and making everything from scratch. My Dad’s Mother even had her own cookbook. I would sit in their kitchens for hours on end watching and observing, and helping when they asked. It was one of my favorite past times.  My Mom rarely made the same meal twice, always inspired by trying a new recipe. We were very blessed!

My Father having traveled Europe for 15 years, tasted almost every type of cuisine/fare there was. He had an incredible palate, and passed that on not only to us, but his grandchildren as well.My son Nick is an Executive Chef for a restaurant in Durango, CO.  According to Jeb, when Nick lived with us while he attended culinary school, it was quite a show watching each of us try to outdo the other in the kitchen at night. Jeb gladly did the shopping every day and became the prep cook for whomever was making the meal of the evening.

Dad managed the Delaney’s Seafood Restaurant at the John Wayne Airport in Orange County, CA for many years. Then my father opened “Restaurant Yebe Tebe” a family restaurant serving Mediterranean cuisine in Anaheim, California.  Growing up, I worked for several years learning the ropes and how to prep food properly for the Chef.

After I graduated, I went on to become a professional licensed Realtor and Property Manager. After my kids were in school full time (1999), I chose to get my Real Estate License. I worked at it full time, and was Top Producer for many years. My husband (ex) at the time was a custom home builder. So it was advantageous to be able to sell the “spec” homes he built as well as being the Property Manager for the apartments we owned. I still keep my Real Estate license current!  In addition, I also owned and operated my own “Construction Clean-up” company for over 20 years. We specialized in cleaning new Custom Homes throughout the Temecula Valley Wine Country.

Freja and Carmen

Carmen and a canine companion

Traveling the world as an Inn Sitter caring for other peoples needs and comfort has become my passion. There is no one thing that ultimately prepared me for becoming an inn sitter. However, I feel the following combination of things is probably a common thread among most successful ones: being approachable, affable, helpful, positive, upbeat, artistic, creative, problem solver, can clean properly, take pride in cooking/baking, presentation, fun, responsible, thorough, thoughtful, empathetic & modest.

We are very good at communication, and like to touch base with the owners/innkeepers if not everyday then several times per week.  We have learned that through email, phone calls, instant messaging and Skype we usually have a great understanding of what each owner is requesting.  Honoring commitments are huge.  Every owner is different.  The key is to listen to what is most important and treat their business as if it were our own.  Most have everything down in writing and make sure to keep open lines of communication available.

I have found that most innkeepers like me to stick to cooking what they normally would offer. It keeps shopping and budgeting on track. However, some Inns have a Chef already in place and no cooking is expected from us. Then there are others that have us come in during the “slow” season, and just look after the place with no guests. So it really just depends on the owners individual wants/needs.

As a side note to some of my hobbies/interests that may pertain to Inn Sitting:
    • I took Floral Design in College thinking at some point it would be fun to own a florist shop.
    • I created and sold my own jewelry with a southwestern flair for 3 years while living in Durango, CO before the kids started school.
    • I’ve taken Tole Painting courses, and made many art pieces that I sold at art and craft shows. I pretty much painted on anything, but mostly wood.

So to sum it up, the way I was raised in regards to cooking and cleaning, as well as my hands on experience with owning/operating my own cleaning company, staging my real estate clients homes so that they could be marketed and sell for the highest price, having a creative and artistic flair, and dealing with peoples wants and needs has completely prepared me for inn sitting. Not only that, but my father’s love for travel…it burns deep in my soul. Inn sitting at this point in my life is more desirable for me than being an innkeeper since it allows us the freedom to continue to travel and see the world.

Ronda

Jeb Marshall

Hello, I am Jeb Marshall, 51, born in Seattle, U.S.A. I received a B.S.B.A. from Central Washington University in 1985 and was a Boeing Design Engineer with a top level security clearance for many years.  My job with Boeing helped me improve organizational skills and become a better problem solver.  As an Inn Sitter you must be ready to solve a multitude of unforeseen problems.  Expect the unexpected is my motto.  Keeping a calm head and formulating the best action in response will always produce the best outcome.

Working for Boeing also taught me that working ten hours a day behind a computer screen was no way to spend my life.  I am reminded of that especially when I am back in the states.  It is sad to see so many people with their eyes fixed to a screen, be it a laptop, phone, I-pad or television.  The real world should be seen, heard and felt with real people and places.

I have also worked as a professional stage actor with various theatre companies and the Seattle Opera. As a stage actor I found another true passion in life.  The ability to perform and make people feel is overwhelming.  I carry that ability with me when I inn sit.  Being able to adapt to different personalities is a big plus as an Inn sitter.  I have also been known to perform one of my many monologues from time to time especially after a glass of wine.  I apologize to Carmen for enduring the same monologues over and over.

Mostar

Carmen and Jeb in Mostar, Bosnia

Carmen and I met in the ocean.  It was a sunny Saturday in early December of 2006, off the beach of Carlsbad, CA.  We got married a year and a half later in the “desert town” of Las Vegas, NV.  Carmen and I compliment each other with our inn sitting duties.  She is an amazing cook, how she comes up with her mouth watering meals is beyond me.  She does most of the cooking and cleaning, however I love filling in wherever is necessary.
The inspiration for us to sell everything and travel the world can be found in one of my favorite quotes by Mark Twain, “Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones that you did do. So throw off the bowlines, sail away from the safe harbor.  Catch the trade winds in your sails.  Explore.  Dream.  Discover.”

Even though society teaches us to buy the big house, the nice car and latest toys, Carmen and I decided that “The Stuff” is overrated.  The true inspiration for selling everything comes from within.  Carmen and I are adventurers at heart and following your heart and dreams will always inspire you!Helping run and care for bed and breakfasts has been and always will be a win-win proposition.  We are inspired to leave each inn sit with smiles from both guests and owners, taking the time to listen and observe, learning and becoming richer from each experience.

The best rewards have been the journey.  It is hard to put into words, however it is like reading a good book. You don’t know where it is going to take you but you know it will most likely enrich.  The faces and feelings have been amazing.  I speak of men and women that I have met and helped not knowing how to speak their language but connecting with them.  Feeling them through non verbal communication can be more rewarding than a long drawn out conversation.  The rewards are great with inn sitting. Sometimes a hug or smile can be reward enough for going the extra mile.

I don’t mind getting my hands dirty, whether in the garden or as a handyman on that unforeseen project.  My list of jobs have ranged from changing switches on a circuit breaker in Switzerland to painting the roof of a casita in 100 degree heat in Costa Rica.  I also work as concierge, driver, grocery shopper, greeter, take reservations, accountant, bus boy, waiter, dishwasher, housekeeper, dog walker, receptionist, security guard and so on.

Me and My Buddies

Jeb with two dogs

My favorite inn sit was for a winery in Satigny, Switzerland.  We arrived for the three week sit on my birthday, flying in from Venice where we had  celebrated Carmen’s birthday a couple days prior.  Upon our arrival into Geneva we were picked up and driven to Satigny which is about 10 kilometers from the airport.  Our duties for this sit was to care for their two wonderful dogs, watch and secure the winery and sign for all deliveries and mail.  You can read about it in more detail in our journal.

My favorite foods are Thai, sushi, seafood, Mexican and Italian dishes.  Who am I kidding? I love all food!  It does depend on freshness of ingredients and who prepares it.  The best Thai meal I ever had was in Spain, best Italian in Australia and best sushi was in Costa Rica.  Carmen has helped open my eyes to the wonderful world of great food.

Most people are afraid to travel to countries in which they do not understand the language.  As long as you show respect and try to blend in, most cultures will accept you and it is amazing how well non verbal communication works.  Carmen speaks German fairly well and she is working on her Spanish.   I speak many languages poorly, but can have conversations in English and Spanish.  The Spanish that is spoken in Spain differs from that in Central America much the same way that English in the states differs from the English spoken in the United Kingdom.
I have learned that the best way to learn about a specific culture is to get lost in it.  Get off the tourist lined streets and don’t be afraid to literally get lost.  Having to ask for help or eventually finding your way back on your own can be quite rewarding and you will be amazed at what you will find.  I enjoy getting off a plane or train and not knowing anything about the culture, it is part of the pure joy of travel.  When it comes to inn sitting, I will take the time to educate myself with a certain area if I have never been and learn everything a good concierge should know.

We have decided to be inn sitters of bed and breakfasts for many reasons.  We enjoy the challenge that everyday is going to be a little bit different.  The reward of being able to share some of our talents while having the opportunity to travel the world and make a living is a dream come true.  The Palawan and Cook islands are on my list of places to visit, however finding new places in Europe will never get old.

After traveling pretty much nonstop over the past two years to over 23 countries, we have discovered a tremendous amount about ourselves. We are able to travel anywhere in the world and are accepting Inn Sits from one week to one year.  Currently we are on a one year Inn Sit, in Los Pargos, Costa Rica until mid September of 2015.  After many Skype interviews and hundreds of applicants, we were offered the job.

We would like to extend an invitation to anyone who would like to stay in the casita for $80 a night. The town is great with award winning restaurants and a great pura vida vibe.  Everything is alive and constantly changing!

So much of life is about timing and luck.  Even though we had sold everything we owned, we feel extremely rich.  We have our health, great kids, and we are living our dream.  Life is full of ups and downs, never take the ups for granted and hopefully learn to weather the downs.

Plans?  What is that?  We would like to take on another inn sitting commitment once we finish inn sitting in Costa Rica.  We are always open to discussing any future inn sitting offers with innkeepers and are available to Skype at any time.

The experiences, sites, sounds, smells and tastes of Europe contrasting with Central America have been incredible. Our journey is far from over.  For those wishing to contact us, our email address is timeawayinnsitters@gmail.com

Thank you, Carmen and Jeb, for sharing your inn sitting adventures, experiences, and dreams with us!

Groundhog Day B&B

Bed and Breakfast Blogging previously focused on Cedar Cove, a Hallmark TV show starring Andie MacDowell, that has a fictional bed and breakfast called The Thyme and Tide.  Did you know that Andie was also in a big screen movie with scenes from a bed and breakfast? The name of this classic comedy was Groundhog Day.

The movie co-starred Bill Murray who played the role of weatherman Phil Connors who goes to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, to cover the annual Groundhog Day Festival. In reality, the movie was filmed an hour northwest of Chicago in the town of Woodstock, Illinois on 344 Fremont Street.

Bill Murray’s weatherman character, Phil, kept waking up to repeat the same day morning after morning in a bed and breakfast.

Groundhog Day (movie poster).jpg

Groundhog Day Movie stills (40)

In the movie, at first his character Phil does not like his producer, Rita (played by Andie MacDowell), but he falls in love with her as he gets to know her.  It is reported that, while they were acting, Andie thought Bill Murray was so funny that she could not stop laughing during the filming of several of their scenes.

Andie MacDowell and Bill Murray in Groundhog Day

The name of the B&B in the Groundhog Day movie is the “Cherry Street Inn”. Interestingly enough, the home was not a bed and breakfast during the time the movie was made. The movie producers built the interior set on a sound stage in a nearby warehouse. Just steps from the bed and breakfast, Woodstock Square was also used as a setting in the film. Filming took place for about a month in 1992 and the movie was in theaters in 1993.

The most recent owners of the property, Everton G. Martin and Karla Stewart-Martin, grew up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, moved around the country (since Everton was active duty Navy), moved back to Milwaukee when he got out of the military, raised their kids there and decided while planning for early retirement that they would like to move to a warmer climate. After looking in several states, they heard about the house here in Woodstock.

Real house from Groundhog Day movie (4)

The house visually was what Karla and Everton were looking for (a historic home with lots of character, wraparound porch, pillars, beautiful perennial gardens, etc). It had been sitting empty for over two years when they came to see it.  They decided it was the perfect venue for a bed & breakfast.  The Martins purchased the property in March 2008 and opened for business June 1, 2010. They are still open and operating the profitable Bed & Breakfast.

Karla recalls receiving many suggestions about what to name their B&B.  They ranged from renaming it “Cherry Street Inn” (its name in the movie) to “Groundhog Day Bed and Breakfast” and more. When the Martins bought the house, it was about 114 years old and they were determined to restore it to the regal, stately home it once was by giving it lots of TLC. Karla and Everton wanted to broaden their guest base to include those who had never seen the movie, but loved restoration of old homes and to those who love the B&B experience.

They named their place the Royal Victorian Manor Bed and Breakfast. They added the subtitle “Groundhog Day” to their signage and advertising. Karla and Everton think it is amazing that fans of the movie only see “Groundhog Day” Bed & Breakfast in their signage and those that have not seen the movie see “Royal Victorian Manor Bed & Breakfast.” From their website, it says that the inn “evolved to offer the perfect combination of modern amenities while maintaining its original majestic qualities.”

Welcome to Royal Victorian Manor Bed & Breakfast, Woodstock. IL.

Renovations were extensive, and their first concern converting the house to a bed & breakfast without compromising the character of this historic home. Karla and Everton initially started with the landscaping on the outside. The fence on the front of the property that you see in the movie was gone. The arch was left but was in disrepair. They installed a new fence and arch, moved some trees around and manicured the perennial beds and added some interesting areas in the gardens.

Inside the house, they overhauled the electrical and plumbing, updated the HVAC (added air conditioning), gutted and updated the kitchen, parlor and dining room, added bathrooms so that the five bedrooms have en suites. Skylights were added to the soaring (10 feet tall or higher) ceilings, master suite, en suite, sitting room, laundry room, and full kitchen.

The Martin’s most favorite transformation was “hands down” the gourmet kitchen.  Once gutted, they added French doors from the dining room into the kitchen, a center island, and hutches with butcher block and off white distressed cabinets and high tech, high efficient stainless steel appliances. It is a lot of fun for them to have it as a place for cooking.

Karla and Everton have a living space they enjoy because it is both functional and comfortable for them. They took over the turret on the third floor. They converted the open attic space to an apartment that is independent of the rest of the house. In keeping with the character of the house, they were able to add inside stairs to the attic (their living space) on the side and back of the house. They converted the attic space on the top floor to a self-contained living area with its own kitchen and laundry.

The three fireplaces on the first floor have the original wood mantel and surrounds. The Martins appreciate that they were able to keep the wood ornamental detail throughout that was original on the staircases and other parts of the house.  The house has all the original hardwood floors, oak trim, stained-glass windows, and an updated gourmet kitchen.

The home has a grand wrap-around porch which overlooks a big fenced yard.  Some of their favorite areas include the wraparound porch, the vegetable garden, the turret, and the kitchen.

The property has 5,815 square feet with eight bedrooms, eight and one-half baths, and is three stories tall. Each bedroom has its own name as well as charm and character.  The Royal Suite has a window that has the view that is as close to the view in the movie of Bill Murray looking down the street.  The home features 5 guest suites with private baths:

  • Captain’s State Room
  • Garden Suite
  • Manor Suite
  • Royal Suite
  • Victorian Suite

They are able to host small and intimate events and special occasions such as:

Their favorite part of operating the B&B, without a doubt, is the many guests that visit the Martins, including those from all over the world.  Guests come from various walks of life, a variety of hobbies, interests, and jobs that bring them here through Woodstock.  Guests enjoy plenty of relaxation when they come to visit.

The couple has been running a successful B&B operation ever since they opened. Since the Martins would like to move closer to family, Karla and Everton have decided to sell their B&B. They plan to continue to operate the B&B until it sells, so it is business as usual for them. According to Karla, “No plans on what our next adventure will be!”

Their realtor, Rick Bellairs of Berkshire Hathaway, can be reached by phone at 815-382-8400 or by email at bellairsric@gmail.com. Visit their website for more information.

Since purchasing the house, the community has shared many stories with them about the making of the movie here in town and some have provided some photos.  Being an avid and passionate quilter, Karla added a groundhog wall quilt hanging in the foyer.

Every February 2 in their town of Woodstock, Illinois, the town celebrates with their annual Groundhog Day Festival.  On that day, the movie Groundhog Day is screened at the local cinema. Guided walking tours are available that weekend.  Visitors can hear the stories provided by people who were part of the film making process.  They can see the plaque that commemorates the time Bill Murray repeatedly stepped in a puddle for this reoccurring scene in the movie.

A huge fan of this movie has the opportunity to purchase this celebrity movie house for sale. Perhaps even an experienced innkeeper will take on this new business opportunity.  The Martins feel that keeping it a bed and breakfast would be a great asset to the community. Whatever happens, this bed and breakfast will always have its fame from the movie Groundhog Day.  We thank the Martins for their generosity in responding to our questions and kindness to let us show some of their pictures.  We wish them an even brighter future.

10 Terrific Twitter Tips for B&B’s

10-terrific-Twitter-tips-for-B-and-Bs

Did you know that there are 255 million monthly active Twitter users?  Did you know that 500 million tweets are sent each day?  Most of us know that Twitter is a popular social media website.

Here are some quick tips so you can get the best out of using Twitter to promote your bed and breakfast inn:

1) Know your audience in order to target your message to the right people.  You want to write to appeal to your specific market–not everyone.  What kind of bed and breakfast guests would you like to attract?

  • Be pet friendly if you want guests with pets
  • Be couple friendly and require kids to be a minimum age
  • Promote being healthy by not allowing smoking on all grounds
  • Accommodate guests with allergies or restricted diets when you cook breakfasts
  • Reach out to those getting married or renewing their vows with ceremonies
  • Provide spa services to guests who like to be pampered
  • Offer extra amenities such as hot tubs or private balcony views

2) Regularly spend time listening to the needs and wants of your target market.  What would ease their pain and make their lives better?

  • Need time to get away from it all
  • Want to relax with a loved one
  • Want to visit a local relative without inconveniencing them
  • Like to visit tourist spots in your area
  • Want personal touch of a B&B versus big hotel

3) Have strategies behind who you follow.  You do not have to follow everyone. Be selective and show your audience what they like to see.

  • Travel tips (give them useful information)
  • Scenic pictures of your area (entice them to visit)
  • Baby animals (who does not like baby animals?)
  • Recipes (you may even offer a cooking class to your guests)
  • Local activities (show them what they can do in your area)

4) Have a consistent presence online.  Tweet at least four to six times per day if possible.

5) Provide useful content based on your brands’ goals.  Selling should not be the focus.

  • Tweet powerful quotes
  • Update readers about your area events
  • Share meaningful stories

6) Tweet with images.  People are visual creatures and tweets with pictures are more than twice as likely to be retweeted.  Images can convey more than words do.

  • Share pictures of the bedrooms in your bed and breakfast
  • Tweet pictures of your outdoor views including landscaping
  • Share pictures of your delightful breakfasts and goodies made
  • Share pictures of local community events including concerts and sports games

7) Be active on other social media channels and have a blog on your website.  Blogs provide fresh content the search engines love.  More online connections come from having a strong presence on other social media websites.

  • Facebook
  • Linked In
  • Pinterest

8) Use hashtags (#) so the reach of your tweets spreads to people searching for that term. Use trending hashtags (labeled “trends”) on the bottom left.  Make sure the hashtags are relevant to the tweet and two hashtags is plenty.

  • Newsworthy events
  • Celebrities
  • Holidays (including national food holidays)
  • This day in history
  • Sports
  • Trending area activities

9) Always have a call to action.  Know what you want them to do after they read your tweet.

  • Look at your website
  • Subscribe to your blog
  • Book a room
  • Schedule their event

10) Monitor your Twitter results with other websites.  Some Twitter tools are available for free or to use on a free trial basis.  Try them out to see which you prefer.

  • Buffer
  • Hootsuite
  • Social Bro
  • Tweetdeck

When you use this tips consistently, you will see a dramatic increase in your numbers:

  • More Twitter followers
  • More retweets
  • More blog subscriptions
  • More guests
  • And more income!

The Art of Pinning

the-art-of-pinning

The art of pinning on Pinterest is visual in nature.  This works very well for visually oriented businesses like bed and breakfasts.  People want to know what your inn looks like and what your breakfasts look like.  Seeing your pins helps them to imagine themselves at your bed and breakfast inn.

Pictures:

  • Motivate them to plan a vacation to stay at your inn
  • Each picture is worth 1,000 words
  • Are more appealing and stronger than words
  • Pin only images with strong visual content
  • Brighter colors bring more joy
  • Feature just one idea or product in each pin
  • Use descriptive keywords you want to be known for
  • If you resize an image, make sure it is still clear and easy to see

Social media

  • Builds relationships with guests and potential guests
  • Raises the visibility of your bed and breakfast online
  • Gets you ranked higher on Google
  • Finds you business contacts like fellow innkeepers and associations

Remember:

  • Share your story of how you came to be bed and breakfast owners/innkeepers
  • Share information you are interested in and that your followers will find useful (such as travel tips)
  • Educate your audience on the advantages of staying at a bed and breakfast
  • Pin pictures of your bed and breakfast
  • Pin pictures of you amenities such as pool, garden, spa, etc.
  • Pin pictures of your community to give guests reasons to want to stay in your area

Etiquette or “Netiquette”:

  • If you were not the first to pin it, give credit to the original pinner.
  • Share and repin to show you are interested in other things outside your own B&B

Pinterest users become part of a larger community.  When we promote other people’s pins they are more likely to follow us.  That is one of my secrets to how I grew such a quick following on Pinterest.  You can too!

Awesome Yoga Retreats

awesome-yoga-retreats

Does your bed and breakfast offer awesome yoga retreats?  The bed and breakfast owners who do, emphasize the peacefulness of their quiet location, the beauty of their scenic nature, and the transformation in body and mind that can come with yoga.

You can encourage guests of all experience levels to challenge themselves in your safe and comfortable setting. Highlight the benefits of their coming: a place for them to strengthen and relax their body, free themselves from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, and grow in creativity.

You may designate specific times of the year for these retreats.  Some B&B owners offer weekend yoga retreats. You can put together a yoga retreat package for your guests.

If no one on staff is an expert yoga instructor, you could find a yoga professional in your local area who is willing to conduct these retreats and pay them a reasonable fee per participant.

Be sure to promote your yoga retreats on your website, in your blog, and through social media.  You may be attracting a whole new clientele of guests to your inn.
