B&B Guests: Special Occasions

bb-guests-special-occasions

Perhaps your bed and breakfast guests are celebrating a special occasion, such as a wedding, honeymoon, anniversary, birthday, or reunion.  When you communicate with them, be sure to find out if they are coming for a memorable reason.

You may offer a special package for honeymooners or people celebrating their birthday or anniversary. Depending upon the size of your bed and breakfast and the number of relatives, you could offer a deal to a family if they book all of your rooms.

Make mutually beneficial agreements with local florists, musicians, and other business people offering complementary services. You can refer each other to more business.  Just as important, your guests will enjoy their stay so much that not only will they return again, they will also refer your bed and breakfast to other potential guests.

B&B Guests: Relaxation #1 Priority

bb-guests-relaxation

Some guests will retreat to your bed and breakfast simply because they want a calm scenic place to relax and not have anything to do. They may just sit and watch the lovely ocean or mountain views your B&B may have.

Their idea of activity are quiet things such as reading, picnicking, and crocheting.  You can assure them they will have the peace and tranquility they are seeking when they become your guests.  If you offer an in-room massage or house a home library, be sure to mention that in your phone conversation and feature that on your website.

B&B Guests: Hobby Lovers

People who practice certain hobbies may be attracted to stay at your bed and breakfast. Common outdoor hobbies include photography and bird watching.  Other hobbies include scrapbooking and writing.

There may even be a local conference related to their hobby in your area.  This is a great opportunity for you to offer a special package to your enthused hobbyists.  Assure them that they will have the quiet they need and beautiful scenery they want when they stay at your bed and breakfast.  This is a win-win situation!

All in the Details

all-in-the-details

Do you ever notice that it is the little things that make a big difference?  Sometimes it is all in the details.  For example, when I stay at a bed and breakfast and they include free use of their washer and dryer (and even supply the detergent and dryer sheets) that is an added bonus to me.

Other little details can include:

  • Friendly phone conversation
  • A professional hand carved sign to see as you approach
  • A warm greeting when you come in
  • A welcome note when you enter your room
  • Specific promotional package for your special occasion
  • Fresh flowers in your room
  • A guest book to write comments in
  • A guidebook to the local area and its attractions
  • A wide selection of books to read
  • Board games to play
  • Chilled wine bottle and wine glasses near the private hot tub
  • Filled basket of various snacks to choose from

The list of details can also be custom tailored to your bed and breakfast.  Perhaps you offer weddings or workshops.  The point is to get creative so that guests appreciate the little details you put into making their stay a happy and memorable experience they will fondly recall.

Helpful Furniture Buying Tips

furniture-buying-tips

Whether you are just starting your bed and breakfast and need to buy a whole houseful of furniture, or if you just want to add a few pieces of furniture, check out these helpful furniture buying tips!

  • Bring swatches or color samples of furniture, drapes, fabrics, paint or wallpaper that you will need to color match. If swatches aren’t available, take good color pictures & bring them with you.
  • If you are buying furniture for a whole room or your entire bed and breakfast, bring a floor plan of each room (include window, door & ceiling measurements) to help you select furniture with the correct dimensions. Measure other pieces of furniture in the room to ensure that your new furniture will be compatible in scale.
  • If necessary, take hall measurements, door measurements and ceiling measurements. If you are buying furniture that will go upstairs in a two or three story bed and breakfast, bring measurements of the hall and stairway so that you can make sure any furniture that you buy can be carried up your stairway.
  • Decide on the furniture style that you like. You can bring pictures of furniture that you like from your favorite home furnishings magazines.
  • With today’s eclectic styles of decorating, many people use different types and finishes of wood in the same room. Select interesting pieces of furniture that complement each other and reflect your taste.
  • If you have oriental and/or decorative rugs that you will be using, make certain that the fabric that you choose for upholstery will complement the colors and design of your rug.
  • To make small rooms look bigger, select furniture and accessories with colors that closely match the walls and floors. Also, reduce the number of pieces of furniture in the room and add reflective surfaces such as mirrors and glass-top table tops.
  • To make a large room look smaller and more intimate, position furniture away from the wall and use taller pieces such as an entertainment center, armoire or screen. Use rugs, patterned upholstery fabrics and printed wallpaper to give the area a warm and more comfortable feeling.
  • When shopping for upholstered furniture, try to get the facts about the basic construction: springs, frames, padding, cushions and fabric.
  • Always test furniture that will be used for seating by doing just that: sit on it! Consider how well the chair fits your particular body build. The height of the arms, the pitch of the back and the support under your knees should feel right for your body.

Have fun shopping and remember to keep track of your receipts so you can write off the expenses for your bed and breakfast.

10 B&B Bedroom Names

10-bb-bedroom-names

Bed and Breakfasts traditionally name each bedroom available to guests. This allows B&B owners, as well as their guests, to be able to distinguish between the rooms.  The B&B bedroom names can be based on any number of reasons.  Here are 10 ways B&B bedrooms names come about:

  • Activity (such as a hobby or a sport like photography or football)
  • Amenity (like a private hot tub or their own personal fireplace in the room)
  • Color in the room (like red or lavender walls or bedding)
  • Country or culture the room represents (such as China or Mexico)
  • Famous people (including famous writers and leaders like Hemingway and Lincoln)
  • History (named after the original residents or names associated with the time period in which it was built)
  • Location (such as on the beach or in a castle)
  • Occasion (such as the Honeymoon Suite or Anniversary Room)
  • Style the room is decorated in (such as Victorian or French Country)
  • Theme (including a particular animal or season)

As bed and breakfast owners, you can have fun with what you name your rooms. Be creative and come up with names of rooms that people would like to say they stayed in. Sometimes B&B owners have signs by the doors to let guests know they have come to the right room.

Naming the rooms in your house gives your bed and breakfast character and distinguishes it from other B&B’s. This also allows your guests to recommend the particular room they stayed in by name to other people.

Creative and Fun Decorating Ideas

creative-decorating-ideas

You want your bed and breakfast to stand out to your guests and make a great impression.  The following is a list of decorating tips:

  • Keep in mind the geographical location of your bed and breakfast when you choose your color theme.  So if it is near water, you can use a them based on light brown sand, pink seashells and corals, ocean blues, and sunny yellows.  If you are in the mountains or a forested area, you can use colors found in the woods, such as deep greens and cranberry reds.
  • There are many different approaches to decorating your inns’ bedrooms.  For a traditional bed-and-breakfast look, use Victorian-style furniture.  For a cottage-style B&B, put handmade quilts on the bed with matching shams.
  • In order for your decor to flow, keep a consistent period or style decor throughout, varying in color themes only from room to room.
  •  Put natural-finish or painted wicker chairs near the bedroom windows.  Put floral fabric cushions in the chairs and add a matching ottoman.  If your B&B has wicker furniture, it is best to use the same style of wicker seating in the main living area as on the front porch.
  •  Decorate the main living area according to its size.  For an extra large living room, arrange several small groups of chairs.  For a smaller room, place a large couch in front of a fireplace, with a chair on each side.  For a relaxed cottage-style look, put loose-fitting canvas slipcovers on the furniture.
  • Accessorize with wall art that reflects nature in the area or local artists and artisans. Fill a large empty vase with rocks or shells that you or your guests have collected from the beach, woods or a neighboring lake.  Place skis on the wall like shown in the above picture for artistic flair.
